No Mum, I really don’t need to go to the toilet!

Have you ever been in a situation where you asked your child a question one too many times and then regretted their answer?  My three year old son had a lot of trouble with toilet training so it became a natural thing to be constantly reminding him and asking if he needed to use the toilet.  Last week I was out with my three year old son and 12 month old daughter running around shopping and getting some banking done when we stopped in at McDonalds for a quick lunch before heading home.  It was lunch time and the place was full of people enjoying their meals.

While I was eating my burger meal I smelled something funny and immediately checked my 12 month old however she was clean.  I could still smell something and I realised that my three year old had not asked to go to the toilet for a while.  I asked him if he needed to go to the toilet but he said no and continued to eat his happy meal.  I was sure that he needed to go to the toilet and realising that I hadn’t brought any extra clean clothes was hoping he didn’t have an accident.  I asked again and got the same reply of no I don’t need to go to the toilet.

The smell was getting worse and I knew that my three year old must have had an accident so I asked again if he needed to go to the toilet.  This time instead of just saying no again he jumped off his seat and in front of most of the people in the dining area of the McDonalds pulled down his pants, bent over and showed me his bottom declaring in a loud voice ‘see mum, it just farts’.  While 40 people in the dining area nearly choked to death on their burgers laughing my son calmly pulled up his pants and climbed back onto the seat and continued to eat his meal.  At this stage I had gone the colour of a tomato with embarrassment but my son seemed unfazed by the laughter of the other patrons.  An older couple sitting at the next table leaned over and made me feel better by thanking me for the best laugh they had ever had.  I still haven’t been back to that McDonalds with the children but I do agree that it was a very funny incident.
